It's Always Something

about

At 3:00pm one summer day in 1986 my friend Tom Worrell said. "Hey Broz, I have some studio time booked at Free Reelin' tonight with these two friends but I didn't have time to plan anything... you wanna come in and track something... these guys are really good." As it happened, the night before I had come up with a riff I thought was catchy (the one you hear in the opening of the song). I had nothing else... zip nada. So I said we gotta have some changes. So in like ten minutes I threw a little chart together... some chords/changes that might make sense around the basic groove to act as a chorus and a bridge. Mind you we had no words, no melody... like I said ... zip. When I got to the studio I took ten minutes and recorded a scratch acoustic guitar of my mapped out changes. This song (one of my all-time favorites) is the drummer and the guitar player, comping/recording their parts to that riff/chart in ONE TAKE... the lead solo included. A week later Tom and I went in and recorded vocals to some lyrics we came up with and added the keyboards. I then mixed the song a month later. Check it out... proof that magic does exist!

I went on to record 2 alternative versions of this tune at considerable expense, trying to improve on it, under the illusion that more (studio) time and newer gear would make it better. But nah... different yes, better, not really. At least they weren't worse! (Was a good lesson for me--don't try to fix what ain't broke).
