about

This third release by The Rowland Brothers finds the brothers again doing what they know best--classic-rock inspired tunes with haunting hooks and melodies; lyric themes ranging from zen philosophy (All These Years"; "Misty Sunshine") to the you-done-me-wrong "Cry" to the eclectic and satirical "Too Many Bugs In This World".

Sweet guitar "tone" seems to be a primary operative when brother Philip co-produces, along with soaring solos reminiscent of Pink Floyd's David Gilmore. Brother Broz still manages to sneak in a midi-synth or two and lavish us with Beatllesque background vocal harmonies.

"Too Many Bugs" sounds so much like Sting and The Police, the Brothers have gotten heat for it as "derivative".

"Well yeah..." says, Broz, "It's meant to be a tribute song. Sting is my favorite songwriter and The Police, one of my favorite bands. We had already cut this song in a much less "policey" and more genuine reggae style production, on our first EP. So why the remake? Well, we were actually cutting it as a demo for getting gigs...more in line with how Phil and I play it live. It had a lame midi drum track on it. Then I got my friend Roger Shirley to cut real drums on it. (Roger ended up doing four tracks on this album.) I liked the sound and the feeling of the track so much--it's so textural, lush and even a bit weird with it's semi-serious, semi-humorous lyrics--I said screw it. Let's release it as is. We are clearly NOT the Police... so what?... we sound like The Police for this one tune! That's a critique--well, an honor!--I can live with! All you Police fans will either love it, hate it, love to hate it, or hate to love it! ... I hope the latter!"

There's a subtle spiritual theme to the record, vaguely implied in it's name "Wide Awake". Rowland expounds, "Some people might think the the name "wide awake" alludes to some kind of spiritual enlightenment and in that regard, be almost pretentious. And yes "Misty Sunshine" does have a bit of that flavor. But the body of material is really more about the "wide awake" you get from being clobbered up-side the head from life and heartache than the wide-awake you get from sitting underneath the Buddha tree. If you can make it through to "All These Years" and "Hold On" I think that'll be more apparent."

"We did get a kick, though, of the name as it relates to our first album "No Sleep For The Dreamers" ... we're wide awake now... the battle continues, we still ain't gettin no sleep, we're still dreamers, we're for sure still wide awake cutting guitar solos and drinking coffee at 3 am, tryin to get this thing DONE... and hoping our fans will like it as much as we did making it!"
