about

This debut album from Jerry S. Maxey aka "Max-E" was an explorative collaboration with songwriter/producer Broz Rowland, who wrote and performed much of the music on the album. Max-E's mid-nineties hip-hop and "gangsta" style -- likely considered "old-school" today -- was in many ways ahead of its time, breaking loose of the strict (and typically overdone) use of samples and loops prevalent in almost all mid-nineties rap albums. It experimented with melding R&B and rock sensibilities, used live drums and guitars on several cuts (even an acoustic!) as well as live keyboard performances. Max-E who claimed to have never sung a melodic line in his life was urged to give it a shot in the chorus to "Lickshots", the album's promo single, reminiscent of an Army boot camp chant. This album withstands the test of time and should fit nicely in any collector's archive.
